Albi: Guide
Albi ist die Hauptstadt des französischen Département (Frankreich)|Départements Tarn (Département)|Tarn in der Region Midi-Pyrénées.
Lage und Daten
Albi hat etwa 50.000 Einwohner. Die geografischen Daten sind: . Albi liegt rund 80 Kilometer nordöstlich von Toulouse in der Mitte Südfrankreichs. Durch Albi fließt der Tarn (Fluss).
Geschichte
Bereits die Römer haben eine Stadt namens Civitas Albiensium angelegt. Im Jahre 843 übernahm Karl der Kahle die Herrschaft über die Stadt. Nach Albi ist die religiöse Gemeinschaft der Albigenser benannt, die im Mittelalter schweren Verfolgungen durch die Kirche ausgesetzt war. In den Albingenserkriegen zwischen 1209 und 1229 wurde die Stadt beinahe vollständig zerstört. Im Jahre 1678 wurde die Stadt Sitz eines Erzbischofs.
Sehenswürdigkeiten
Kathedrale Ste-Cécile
Der Bau der Kathedrale wurde im Jahre 1282 begonnen und im Jahre 1482 beendet. Sie ist im Stil der Backsteingotik als Festung gebaut.
Sie hat eine völlig einmalige Form, und zwar von außen und von innen. Die einschiffige Saalkirche Sainte-Cécile wurde 1282 noch später begonnen als Rodez und 1390 vollendet. Sie sieht mit ihrer durchgehend glatten Außenwand aus wie eine Wehrkirche und sie ist es auch in einer Hinsicht. Das Strebesystem ist deswegen nach innen gezogen worden: eine sehr seltene Variante, deren Mechanik im Innenraum deutlich wird. Der politische Grund für dieses Aussehen liegt darin, dass die berüchtigten Albigenserkriege von dieser Stadt ihren Namen haben, dass es hier also große soziale und religiöse Auseinandersetzungen gab, denen diese Kathedrale ihr ungewöhnliches Aussehen verdankt.
Der Innenraum wurde von italienischen Künstlern mit Fresken der Frührenaissance verziert. Sehenswert ist ein Fresko aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, das das Jüngste Gericht zeigt. Die Orgel wurde zwischen 1734 und 1736 gebaut.
Mit bis zu sechs Metern Mauerstärke ist Sainte-Cécile d'Albi das größte Backsteingebäude der Welt.
Musée Toulouse-Lautrec
Im Bischofspalast wurde das Museum von Toulouse-Lautrec eingerichtet. Neben vielen Gemälden von ihm finden sich auch zahlreiche Gemälde von Künstlern wie Degas, Rodin und anderen.

Jean-François de Galaup de La Pérouse , ( 23. August 1741 in La Gua, Albi, † 1788 bei Vanikoro, Salomonen) war ein französischer Seefahrer, Weltumsegler und Geograph. In seiner Heimatstadt Albi wurde ein Lycée (Gymnasium) nach ihm ernannt.
