Saint-Martin-de-Ré: Guide

Saint-Martin-de-Ré ist der Hauptort der Île de Ré an der Frankreich|französischen Atlantikküste. Die umfangreiche Festungsanlage wurde im frühen 17. Jahrhundert gebaut und später von Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban|Vauban noch erheblich erweitert. Von der in Hafennähe gelegenen Zitadelle wurden früher die Sträflinge ins Bagno nach Guyana und Neukaledonien verschifft, (wie es etwa Henri Charrière in Papillon (Buch)|Papillon schildert). Der Hafen ist Tide|tideabhängig und fällt bei Ebbe völlig trocken. Heute ist Saint-Martin ein idyllischer, sauberer Ferienort mit ca. 2700 Einwohnern. Es gibt einem Sportboothafen mitten in der Stadt um den sich Hotels, Restaurants und Bistrots gruppieren, die zum Verweilen einladen. In den Festungsanlagen weidet heute die letzte große Eselherde der Insel. Die Tiere wurden früher zur Arbeit in den Salzgärten eingesetzt und sind heute ein attraktiver Anziehungspunkt, besonders für Kinder.
