Cortona: Guide
Die Stadt Cortona liegt nördlich des Trasimenischer See|Trasimenischen Sees in der Toskana südöstlich von Arezzo in der gleichnamigen Provinz Arezzo|Provinz. Sie hat ca. 22.000 Einwohner und eine Fläche von 342 km².
Die Stadt wurde von den Etruskern gegründet und war eine ihrer ältesten und bedeutendsten Städte. Die Römer eroberten sie 310 v.Chr., die Goten im 5. Jahrhundert nach Christus. Die Stadt ist seit 1325 Bischofssitz.
Die Sehenswürdigkeit der Stadt ist die Kirche San Francesco. Diese ist die erste Kirche der Franziskaner außerhalb von Assisi.
Berühmtester Sohn der Stadt ist wohl der Maler Luca Signorelli; einige seiner Gemälde, sowie auch Bilder von Fra Angelico befinden sich in der Kathedrale.
Das Stadtbild wird von Häusern aus der Zeit des Mittelalters und der Renaissance, sowie einer Stadtmauer aus dem 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. geprägt.
