Die Stadt Spoleto liegt in Umbrien. Sie ist ein international berühmtes Fremdenverkehrs- und Kulturzentrum. Einst römische Kolonie ab 241. v. Chr., von den Goten belagert, wurde sie schließlich von den Longobarden eingenommen. Von der Stadtrepublik Perugia 1324 unterworfen, ging sie später im Kirchenstaat auf. Spoleto hat 40.458 Einwohner.
