Palanga (deutsch Polangen, polnisch Połąga) ist ein Ostseebad in Litauen mit rund 17.600 Einwohnern.

Lage

Palanga liegt an der offenen Ostseeküste rund 20 km nördlich der Bezirkshauptstadt Klaipeda (Memel) und etwa 300 km nordwestlich der litauischen Landeshauptstadt Vilnius. In nördlicher Richtung sind es weniger als 20 km bis zur Lettland|lettischen Grenze. Palanga bot über Jahrhunderte den einzigen litauischen Zugang zur Ostsee, daher wurde im jetzigen Gemeindeteil Šventoji (Ort)|Šventoji schon früh ein Hafen angelegt.

Palanga als Kurort

Palanga gehört neben Neringa zu den bedeutendsten Zentren des litauischen Fremdenverkehrs - mit Hotels, Campingplätzen, einer langen Strandpromenade mit Seebrücke und einem Flughafen.

Sehenswert ist das im ehemaligen Schloss des Grafen Feliksas Tiskevicius (erbaut 1897) untergebrachte Bernsteinmuseum sowie der ab 1897 angelegte Botanische Garten. Die katholische Sankt-Marien-Kirche mit einem 76 Meter hohen Turm wurde 1897-1906 im neugotischen Stil errichtet.

Anliegende Ortschaften

Zu Palanga gehört der Ortsteil Nemirseta. Dieses Dorf war zu preußischen Zeiten der nördlichste Ort des Deutsches Reich|Deutschen Reiches (daher auch der Reim Nimmersatt, wo das Reich sein Ende hat...).

Ein weiterer Gemeindeteil ist Butingė, wo ein Erdöl|Ölverladeterminal betrieben wird.
