Kuching ist die Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Sarawak in Malaysia mit 570.579 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Januar 2005).

Kuching liegt im Malaysia | malayischen Bundesstaat Sarawak an der Nordküste der Insel Borneo am Sarawak-Fluss.

Klima

Das Klima in Kuching ist Tropen|tropisch, durchschnittlich warm und regenreich. Der durchschnittliche jährliche Niederschlag beträgt 4.000 Millimeter. Der meiste Regen fällt während des Monsun von Dezember bis Februar. Die Temperatur beträgt 26 Grad Celsius im Jahresmittel.

Geschichte

Die weißen Raja

Der Name der im Jahre Katze in der weißen Rajas von Borneo. Durch den zweiten weißen Raja Charles Johnson Brooke wurden die Meisten der historischen Gebäude der Stadt errichtet. So wurde das alte Sarawak Museum 1891 im Stil eines französischen Rathauses gebaut. Fort Margherita wurde nach der Frau von Charles Brooke, Margaret Alice Lili de Windt, der Raja|Rani, benannt

Bevölkerung

Im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts haben sich in Kuching Malaien, Dayak, China|Chinesen, Inder und einige andere ethnische Gruppen angesiedelt.

Die chinesische Bevölkerung besteht größtenteils aus Fujian|Fujianesen (Hokkien) in den urbanen Bereichen und Hakka in den ländlichen Bereichen. Weiterhin gibt es Fuzhou|Foochow, Chaozhou, Hainanese, Kanton (Stadt)|Kantonesen, Henghua etc.

Die Einwohner bezeichnen sich selbst an erster Stelle als Sarawak und alles andere erst an zweiter Stelle.

Kuching ist geteilt in einen nördlichen und einen südlichen Teil, wobei beide Teile eigene Bürgermeister haben. Der eine Teil wird hauptsächlich von chinesischstämmigen Einwohnern bewohnt, der Andere von Malaien.

Kultur und Sehenswürdigkeiten

Interessante Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt sind das Urwaldfrüchten im Angebot.

In der näheren Umgebung von Kuching befinden sich viele Attraktionen wie den Mangrovenwälder und den Damai-Beach, der berühmte Bako National Park, der Kubah Nationalpark mit dem Matang-Wildlife-Center, Jong's Crocodile Farm und das Nationalparks in Sarawak.
