Aberystwyth: Guide
Aberystwyth (Walisische Sprache|walisisch "Mündung (des Flusses) Ystwyth") ist ein Seebad in Wales an der Cardigan Bay in der Grafschaft Ceredigion. Die Einheimischen nennen ihre Stadt oft einfach Aber.
Die Universitätsstadt liegt auf 27m Höhe und hat die geographische Lage von
Aberystwyth hat etwa 12.000 Einwohner und ist die Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Ceredigion. Außerdem stellt die Stadt mit der University of Wales, Aberystwyth (ca. 7.000 Studenten) und der Nationalbibliothek von Wales einen kulturellen Mittelpunkt in Zentral-Wales dar. Nahe der Stadt wird Bleierz abgebaut und Verhüttung|verhüttet.
7,8% der Bevölkerung spricht laut der Volkszählung von 2001 ausschließlich walisische Sprache|Walisisch, weitere 35,82% sprechen Walisisch neben Englisch, können auf walisisch aber nicht oder kaum lesen und schreiben. 29,3% der Bevölkerung geben an, Walisisch sprechen, lesen und schreiben zu können.
Aberystwyth pflegt Städtepartnerschaft|Städtepartnerschaften mit der deutschen Stadt Kronberg im Taunus und mit der französischen Stadt Saint-Brieuc.
Zudem ist Aberystwyth mittlerweile auch in aller Munde, da sich dort eine nette Geschichte ereignet hat:
Ein Unbekannter hat Mitte Juni 2006 das kleine Städtchen mit einem Geldregen begrüßt. Viele 20 Pfund Noten fielen auf Passanten herab (insgesamt ca 20.000 Pfund) die sich über den plötzlichen Geldsegen freuten. Das moderne Sterntaler-Märchen wurde von einer Stimme begleitet die zuvor rief "Wer will Geld geschenkt haben?".
Parallelen sind hierbei zu einem Ereignis in Edinburgh zu ziehen, wo ebenfalls Geld unter die Leute gebracht wurde. Hier wurden allerdings Briefumschläge mit der Aufschrift "Glauben sie an Engel?" verteilt welche 5, 10 oder 20 Pfundnoten enthielten
