Torquay: Guide
Torquay ist eine Stadt an der Südküste von England in der Grafschaft (England)|Grafschaft Devon (England)|Devon. Im Laufe der Zeit hat sie sich so an der Küste von Torbay vergrößert, dass sie nun nicht mehr sichtlich getrennt zur benachbarten Stadt Paignton ist. Die Einwohnerzahl beträgt 62.963 (Stand: 2001). Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde Torquay ein populärer Küstenerholungsort, berühmt für ein gesundes Klima.
Die Stadt ist der Geburtsort der Schriftstellerin Agatha Christie. Der US-amerikanischer Unternehmer und Erfinder Isaac Merritt Singer, der wesentliche Beiträge zur Entwicklung der Nähmaschine geleistet hat, liegt dort begraben.
Torquay ist präsent in der Football League One mit dem Torquay United FC. Am 12. Februar 1950 wurde auf einer Konferenz die European Broadcasting Union|EBU (European Broadcasting Union) gegründet. Das Ziel war ein Netzwerk zum Austausch von Nachrichtenfilmen. Gründungsmitglieder waren 23 Rundfunkanstalten aus Europa und dem Mittelmeerraum.
Torquay ist der Spielort von Fawlty Towers, einer berühmten Sitcom, die in den 1970ern entstanden ist. Gefilmt wurde die Show jedoch in Cambridge (England)|Cambridge und Berkshire.
